Walk any contemporary upholstery showroom and you will see fabrics that look heathered, dimensional and slightly vintage without being printed. Very often this is spray-dyed chenille jacquard — a technique we have produced at scale since our early jacquard years in Haining.
What ‘spray dyed’ means
In normal yarn-dyed cloth, every filament of a yarn carries the same color. In spray dyeing, colored dye is sprayed onto the surface of soft chenille yarn under controlled tension, so the dye penetrates the outer fibers while the core keeps its base tone. When this yarn is woven on an electronic jacquard loom, raised pile areas and flat areas catch light differently — one fabric shows three or four tonal values from a two-color spray recipe. The effect is intrinsic to the yarn, not printed on the cloth, so it cannot rub off as a surface print can.
Performance characteristics
- Hand feel: dense, soft pile with velvet-like warmth.
- Weight range: our upholstery chenilles span 150–700 gsm production capability; typical contract lines fall in the 400–600 gsm band (e.g. our HG11133 Micro Dot chenille is 570 g/m²). Exact weight follows each specific fabric.
- Durability: tight jacquard grounds give strong seam slippage resistance; we provide batch-specific abrasion test reports on request.
- Color consistency: spray lots are numbered and logged so re-orders from the same lot recipe keep tonal consistency across batches.
- Certification: produced by an OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Class I certified mill (certificate SH015 264621, valid until 30 June 2027).
Where it is used
Spray-dyed chenille jacquards are specified for sofas, armchairs, headboards, wall panels and hospitality seating — anywhere a tactile, light-shifting surface is wanted. The spray look also hides everyday soiling better than flat solid velvets, which is why it is popular in family and contract environments.
Care basics
Vacuum with a soft brush attachment; blot spills, do not rub; rotate cushions to even out pile pressure. For project quantities, request our care sheet with the lot documentation.
