Abrasion resistance decides whether an upholstery fabric survives three years or thirty. Two test families dominate the market, and international buyers frequently mix them up. Here is the plain-language version.
The two tests
Martindale (ISO 12947 / BS 5690): the fabric rubs itself against standard abrasive in a Lissajous figure; results are reported in cycles until first two yarns break. The test simulates sliding, multidirectional wear and is the common language in Europe and most of Asia.
Wyzenbeek (ASTM D4157): a ‘double rub’ test pushing the fabric back and forth in one direction with a silk-like wire finger; results in double rubs. This is the common language in North America.
Industry rules of thumb
Widely used benchmarks (these are general guidelines, not a substitute for a fabric’s own test report):
- Martindale ~10,000 cycles: light domestic use.
- Martindale ~20,000: heavy domestic.
- Martindale ~30,000+: contract / commercial seating.
- Wyzenbeek 3,000+ double rubs: light-to-medium domestic; 15,000: heavy duty.
Because the mechanisms differ, do not convert one scale into the other — a fabric strong in Martindale is not automatically strong in Wyzenbeek, especially textured jacquards and chenilles where pile anchoring matters more than yarn abrasion.
What actually protects a jacquard
- Pile anchoring: tight base weave and good yarn twist keep chenille pile from shedding.
- Ground composition: polyester grounds abrade far slower than short-fiber grounds at equal cost.
- Finishing: the difference between 20k and 40k cycles often lies in finishing, not fiber.
What to request from your supplier
Ask for a batch-specific test report naming method, standard, abradant and end-point criteria — not a marketing ‘tested to 100,000 cycles’ claim. At Huaming we supply abrasion data per production batch on request, so the report matches the lot that actually ships. Our upholstery chenille and jacquard lines cover 150–700 gsm production capability, and each model page lists its own specification.
